Outdoor Learning and Play

Our EYFS team believe that children’s free choice is a critical factor in enriching their learning and contributing to their well-being and development.

Children use play in the natural environment to learn about the world they inhabit with others. The outdoor area is an important part of the EYFS with many children choosing to learn outside for much of the day.

We try to ensure that the range of activities outside reflects the different curriculum areas, for example setting up quiet spaces for a maths game, reading areas and creating spaces for construction.

Children also experience outdoor play and forest school experiences through Pride in Play sessions. These sessions aim to develop children's independence to explore and discover in the natural world and to experience appropriate risk and challenge. They have the opportunity to develop positive relationships with themselves and other people and a strong, positive relationship with their natural world.
